Who is Vajrakilaya?
Vajrakilaya (Tibetan: Dorje Phurba) is one of the most revered meditation deities in Tibetan Buddhism. He embodies the enlightened power that removes obstacles, cuts through ignorance, and transforms negative emotions into wisdom.
Although he appears fierce, his true nature is boundless compassion.
Why Does He Look Angry?
His wrathful appearance is symbolic—it is not a sign of hatred or violence.
In Tibetan Buddhism, wrathful deities represent compassion in its most powerful form. Just as a surgeon may perform a painful operation to save a life, Vajrakilaya’s fierce expression symbolizes the determination to eliminate the causes of suffering.
His purpose is to destroy:

—not to harm living beings.
What Is the Ritual Dagger?
The phurba (ritual dagger) is Vajrakilaya’s most recognizable attribute.
It symbolizes:
